England Through the Ages
Although abounding in reminders of the past, York is very much a city for the here and now, with excellent shops, bars and restaurants, many along the River Ouse. Surrounding it are the medieval city walls – the longest and best preserved in England – and many of the gates that once gave access to the city.
Walk the walls for wonderful views of the city and towering York Minster. Standing proud on a hill, this cavernous church is the seat of the Archbishop of York, the 2nd highest position in the Church of England.
A little south is The Shambles, a narrow street with medieval buildings that now house quaint shops. Going further back in time is the Jorvik Centre, a fascinating museum showcasing the city’s Viking remains. You can even try out archaeology for yourself at the DIG excavation pits, with replica finds from York’s Roman, Viking, medieval and Victorian eras.
Other York attractions include the National Railway Museum, home to the Flying Scotsman and Mallard trains. Around a 30-minute drive away, Castle Howard is a stately home on an over 1,000-acre estate.
Leeds-Bradford Airport is the nearest airport, and there's a great range of hotels, B&Bs and guesthouses in York and on the outskirts available on Booking.com.

We only had a short look around late afternoon on the day we arrived and then crabbed something to eat in one of the pubs. We only booked into the apartment for 2 nights as we were in the area for a family wedding and then going onto Whitby. We enjoyed what time we were in York and will probably come back for a longer visit sometime in the future so that we can explore it in more detail.

York is a great place to visit. I had to ask for help a lot getting around the city And merchants and Pubs always helped me in a friendly manor. Tour companies have knowledge guides. I used Mountain Goat tours and I recommended them. The Cutlery Pub is a great place to eat. The Mad Alice tour is excellent. The castle museum was worth seeing. Fantastic city - plenty of bars cafes and restaurants, and interesting independent shops. Wonderful medieval architecture and quirky pubs. York Minster is well worth a visit with the underground museum informative and genuinely interesting. Definitely recommend coming to visit away from the busy periods as I can imagine the City becomes difficult to navigate with so many extra visitors. Reception staff was responsive and quick. And kind to also enable as late a check out as possible despite running full capacity, because I had a fresh fracture and could not move freely.

The Dean's Court is located literally across the street from the front towers of York Minster. The hotel is one of those older "Grand Dame" type of English hotels, with a lot of character.
